THE NAKUI STORY

The Nakuis are a small, semi-nomadic nation of hunter-gatherers living along a tributary of the Sepik River in eastern PNG. Hidden away among remote foothills and swamp lands, they garden, fish, and hunt and survive. Until the 1980's they were isolated from the outside world in nearly every way; geographic,

social, medical, educational and economic. The eventual result would have been the extinction of the Nakui culture, language and way of life.  Today the Nakuis are a growing community who's future looks brighter than its past.

In 2001 the first group of Nakuis were taught through the Bible. After 4 months of listening to contextualized Bible lessons a small group of youth and young adults accepted Christ as their "Promise Man" sent by their Creator God as their Savior. Today the first generation church is growing under the leadership of three elders. In a society that traditionally abuses women, neglects children and wars with surrounding tribes, the Nakui church represents hope and change for the future.

THE CHURCH
BIBLE TRANSLATION

Before 2001, the Nakui language was unwritten and they had no access to the message of the Bible. By 2010 about 35% of the Nakui New Testament was completed and published. The project was set aside until late 2016 when the church leaders approached us asking for more translated books of the Bible. They explained that church is growing and now a large group of younger Nakuis are excited to be taught from the Word. While the door is still open for us to meet this need, we are compelled to be the answer to their prayer.
